Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Delta State Chapter has called on stakeholders committed to the advocacy against Gender-Based Violence, GBV, to come up with more strategies to end the menace in the country.

Delta State chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Sonia Unobunjo made the call on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, when she led women journalists on a sensitization campaign to the ever-busy Koka Roundabout in Asaba the state capital as part of activities to mark the 2023 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence, with the theme ‘UNITE! Invest to prevent violence against women and girls’.

Unobunjo emphasized that stakeholders should not wait until November 25 to sensitize the public on GBV-related issues but should be regular campaigns through various platforms to save more lives on time.

She observed that GBV is on the increase in the society no thanks to adults particularly parents who perpetuate the unspeakable act in the presence of their children and wards which could affect the psyche of the younger generation.

She called for gender equality for boys and girls, men and women in their chosen careers or fields of endeavour.

Also, NAWOJ chairperson of Zone F, Comrade Stella Macaulay encouraged children to speak out whenever they observe any form of violence particularly against women and girls urging everyone, “When you See Something, Say Something”.

Meanwhile, the Association has thanked the Delta State Government for its sustained support in the fight against Gender-Based Violence through the enactment of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) law and, the establishment of SARC and Safe Home in the three senatorial districts of the state.

NAWOJ Delta further urged relevant stakeholders especially women groups in the state to improve sensitization of people regardless of age, at the grassroots.
