MWAN Delta leads charge against FGM

The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Delta State branch, has marked the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) with a renewed appeal to all stakeholders to unite in the fight against this harmful practice.

This significant occasion which is observed globally today was marked by Delta MWAN in partnership with the MWAN National Maternal and Child Health Committee and AIM-MNCHN.

In a statement released to The Pointer, the President of MWAN Delta State Branch and State Team Lead of the MWAN AIM-MNCHN Project, Dr. Olive Ogelle expressed concern over the enduring impact of FGM.

She highlighted that this traditional practice continues to affect millions of women and girls worldwide saying,
“According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 200 million women and girls have experienced some form of FGM, with the highest prevalence found in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. In Nigeria, the Niger Delta region sees particularly high rates, where FGM is ingrained in cultural beliefs and traditions.”

Highlighting recent legislative progress, Dr. Ogelle noted that while FGM remains prevalent in rural areas of Delta State, the region has made strides towards its eradication by implementing the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act).

To further combat the issue of FGM and enhance maternal health, Dr. Ogelle emphasised the need for a multifaceted approach.

“MWAN Delta advocates for the strengthening of laws that prohibit FGM and support survivors, as well as community engagement to raise awareness about the dangers of the practice and promote alternative rites of passage. Additionally, the association underscores the importance of providing medical, psychological, and social support to FGM survivors, alongside training healthcare providers to recognise and address the needs of affected women and girls,” she said.
