In what is being described as a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have formally announced their move to form a new opposition coalition, citing the irredeemable state of the PDP.

The high-stakes meeting of “Concerned PDP Leaders and Stakeholders” held on Tuesday, July 1, at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, brought together influential figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, former House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal, and former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, among others.

Chairing the meeting, Senator David Mark read a communique that outlined the group’s resolution to align with the emerging National Opposition Coalition Group (NOCG), with advanced talks underway to adopt the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the platform for this new political force.

> “All efforts to rescue and reposition the PDP have failed. The party is irreparably damaged,” Senator Mark declared, adding that the new coalition seeks to restore national unity, rebuild the economy, uphold democratic values, and tackle entrenched institutional corruption.

He emphasized that the coalition must unite all patriotic Nigerians—especially those disenchanted with the PDP—under a common platform to “dislodge the APC and reclaim Nigeria’s future.”

The leaders condemned what they described as the APC’s misrule, accusing the ruling party of bringing the country to “a ridiculous end.”

The communiqué also called on well-meaning Nigerians and progressive stakeholders to rise above partisan lines and join the coalition, which is set to publicly unveil its leadership on Wednesday, in what insiders describe as the dawn of “a new political order.”

Other notable attendees were Chief Tom Ikimi – Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Gabriel Suswam – Former Benue Governor, Liyel Imoke – Former Cross River Governor, Senator Tunde Ogbeha, Emmanuel Ibehi, Senator Abdul Ningi and Dr. Babangida Aliyu – Former Niger State Governor.

Also in attendance were Zainab Maina – Former Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Josephine Anenih, Hajia Inna Ciroma – Women Leaders, Celestine Omehia – Former Rivers Governor, Senator Ben Obi – Former Presidential Adviser, Dr. Sam Egwu – Former Minister of Education, Uche Secondus – Former PDP National Chairman and Kola Ologbondiyan – Former PDP Spokesperson

This development is expected to redefine the opposition landscape and could significantly impact the political configuration as Nigeria moves toward the 2027 elections.
