Olorogun John Nani, Chairman of the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), has commended Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what he described as a thoughtful and strategic demonstration of respect for the traditional institution through the presentation of 65 Sports Utility Vehicles to traditional rulers across the state.
Reacting to the governor’s gesture, Nani said the decision underscored a deep understanding of the critical role traditional rulers play in complementing government efforts, particularly at the grassroots where peace, stability and community trust are essential for development.
According to him, Governor Oborevwori’s approach to governance reflects an appreciation of traditional rulers as indispensable partners rather than ceremonial figures.
“The Governor has once again shown that he understands governance beyond policy statements. By empowering traditional rulers with tools that enhance their mobility and effectiveness, he is strengthening the very foundation of grassroots administration,” Nani said.
He noted that royal fathers serve as the first point of contact between government and local communities, adding that their involvement in conflict resolution, community mobilisation and support for security initiatives often determines the success of government programmes.
Nani described the presentation of rugged SUVs as a practical intervention, stressing that many traditional rulers operate in rural and riverine areas with difficult terrains where mobility is a major challenge.
“This is not about luxury. It is about functionality and service delivery. When traditional rulers are well supported, governance becomes easier, faster and more responsive to the needs of the people,” he stated.
The DESOPADEC chairman further aligned the governor’s action with the MORE Agenda, saying the gesture reflects inclusive governance and fairness, especially in recognising institutions that contribute silently but consistently to peace and development.
He assured that stakeholders in oil-producing and riverine communities, where DESOPADEC operates, have continued to benefit from the stabilising influence of traditional rulers, noting that sustained collaboration between government and the traditional institution remains critical to development outcomes.
Nani also praised the governor for maintaining a respectful, non-confrontational relationship with monarchs, which he said has helped to sustain peace across Delta State.
“Governor Oborevwori’s leadership style is built on respect, consultation and empathy. His relationship with traditional rulers has clearly paid dividends in stability and cooperation, and this gesture will further cement that bond,” he added.
