The Nigeria Center For Disease Control, NCDC, says 536 persons contracted the COVID-19 Virus on New year day.
The NCDC on Sunday said that those who tested positive raised the tally of the infection in Nigeria to 242,877.
It stated also that two persons died of COVID-19 complications on Saturday, raising the death toll to 3,033.
The health agency added that the positive cases recorded on Saturday were in 12 states and the FCT with Lagos topping the chart with 259 cases, followed by Rivers with 90 infections, 58 of which were actually recorded on December 31, 2021.
Oyo recorded 46 infections on January 1, followed by Edo with 43 infections, Kaduna had 29 cases, FCT 25, and Cross River 12, while Nasarawa had 10.
Osun state recorded six new infections, Gombe, Kano and Ogun recorded five cases each while Jigawa had a sole case.
The NCDC stated also that 482 victims were discharged from hospitals on Saturday after recovering from the infection.
According to NCDC, the recoveries include a backlog of 122 patients discharged in Rivers.
Out of the total of 242,877 persons infected in Nigeria so far, 214,778 have recovered from the virus, with Nigeria testing 3,823,309 samples since the outbreak of the virus in February 2020.
Meanwhile, England on New Year Day recorded 162,572 coronavirus cases.
This brings the total number of coronavirus cases in the country to 13.1 million, according to official figures released late on Saturday.
The country also reported a further 154 coronavirus-related deaths.
The total number of coronavirus-related deaths in Britain now stands at 148,778, with 11,918 COVID-19 patients still in the hospital.
The latest figures are an increase from 160,276 cases and 178 fatalities recorded in England on New Year’s Eve, December 31.
