The Delta State Waste Management Board has blamed the authorities of Uvwie Local Government Council for frustrating its efforts in evacuating the expanding heaps of refuse in Orhumaro quarters in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area
The representing Delta Central in the State Waste Management Board, Olorogun Daniel Ighedo stated this while reacting to calls by residents of Orhumaro Quarters on the Board and the Uvwie Council Chairman to urgently evacuate the heaps of refuse dotting the entire landscape in the area.
Ighedo alleged that Uvwie Council authorities have continued to thwart the board’s efforts in evacuating the several refuse heaps that have taken over the community for decades.
The residents who spoke to newsmen lamented the large number of refuse heaps which have continued to pose serious health hazards to them as a result of the stench oozing from the refuse heaps.
They wondered why the State Waste Management Board and the authorities of Uvwie Council allegedly refused to evacuate the heaps of refuse in the community located in the heart of the Effurun metropolis.
When contacted, the Uvwie Council Chairman, Mr. Ramson Onoyake in a phone chat with NewsNet dismissed the claim by Olorogun Ighedo that the council was frustrating effort by the State Waste Management Board to evacuate the heaps of refuse in Orhumaro Quarters.
Onoyake explained that both the council and the board have in the past jointly carried out cleanup exercises in the council area, wondering what could have triggered the outburst from Ighedo.
He however said the council has taken note of the refuse heaps in the Orhumaro Quarters and will take steps to evacuate them.
The Uvwie Council boss accused Ighedo of sometimes working at cross purposes with the council on cleanup of the council area noting that the responsibility ought to collective in achieving the commitment of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa in ensuring a clean Delta.
