Delta govt begins opening of major waterways in Warri, Uvwie four days to demolition of buildings, other structures

Delta State Government has begun the opening of major water canals in Warri and Uvwie areas as part of its flood control efforts whenever it rains.

Delta State Director-General, Special Duties, Chief Frank Omare on Friday commenced the opening of the major water canals even as he perfects arrangements for the demolition of buildings and other structures obstructing the free flow of water in waterways across the state.

Recently, the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) began clearing blocked drainages in Warri and Uvwie largely attributable to the poor environmental cleanliness of residents some of whom deliberately dump their waste into drainages.

However, as good as the opening of the drainages with blocked major waterways around these two local government areas it is difficult for flood water to discharge into the major waterways down to the rivers.

It is for this reason, that swamp buggies were on Friday moved to major waterways in different locations in Warri and Uvwie to open them.

The locations include the waterway that cut across behind Eburu Street area, Robinson Plaza down to Willie Street.

The second waterway being opened up is the one that runs from Effurun GRA connecting Okoloba to Aka Avenue down to the Ekpan River.

The third waterway where work is going on is the one on the NNPC Housing Complex linking also the Ekpan River.

There is also another swamp buggy working from the Ugborikoko end.

Some residents applauded the Delta State government for a job well done.

The Director- Special Duties, Chief Frank Omare, who spoke with journalists said he will be firm in carrying out the job.

He urged residents to imbibe good habits towards their environment to enable the government to spend less of taxpayers’ monies in opening and clearing drainages and major water channels.

Chief Omare restated the commitment of the Oborevwori-led administration to giving a facelift to t Warri, especially in the area of environment.
