As part of its flood control measures, the Delta State Government will on Monday, August 7, 2023, commence the demolition of buildings and other structures on natural waterways across the state.

Warri, Uvwie, Udu and Ughelli are among the first target areas for the exercise to be carried out by the Director-General, Special Duties, Chief Frank Omare.

Assisting him in the exercise are officials of the contracting firm handling the ongoing construction of the stormwater project being executed by the state government in the Warri/Uvwie area.

Officials of the firm had on Saturday, July 22, 2023, conducted Chief Omare and his team round some of the structures posing as obstacles to the project aimed at channelling water to nearby rivers.

Officials from the Delta State Ministry of Lands & Survey will also be on ground to ascertain the authenticity of approval documents of those whose buildings and other structures were built on existing natural water channels.

Chief Omare told NewsNet Nigeria that bulldozers and other heavy-duty equipment have been mobilised for the demolition exercise which will be devoid of sentiment and political colouration.

Omare in a previous interview insisted that: “We are going to pull down structures blocking our natural waterways. An individual comfort cannot destroy the comfort of millions of people. We won’t allow it.

“It is not about Frank Omare, it is not about Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, it is about the government of Delta State.

“I stay in Warri, when it rains for 10 minutes most areas are flooded. We must be disciplined. It is not political. I am serving this government not because of anything but let me contribute my quota.”
