The management of Delta State University, Abraka, says it deeply regrets the death of a final-year law student of the Oleh Campus, Jeffery Omatseyi, who got drowned in Graceland Hotel swimming pool, Irri, in Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, an anonymous source told NewsNet on Tuesday morning.

According to the dependable source, “The management of the institution is saddened by the unfortunate death and appeals strongly for calm.

“We condole with the family, the SUG and Law Faculty at this moment of their grief.”

NewsNet gathered that the unfortunate incident which occurred on Friday threw the University community into mourning.

Students from the Law faculty of the University, held a candlelight procession on Saturday in honour of the deceased.

While expressing pain over the sudden death of the student, the President of Student Union Government of DELSU Oleh campus, Comrade Innocent, demanded an investigation into the incident maintaining that the accounts of the hotel management and the police on the tragedy were conflicting, adding that, “An Ijaw indigene could not have died in a swimming pool of two feet”.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Onome Onovwakpoyeya, confirmed the incident.

She said, “Yes, a young boy, who they later found out to be a student, died at the swimming pool.

“They said he came to swim and unfortunately drowned in the pool. By the time he was rushed to a hospital, a doctor confirmed him dead.”
