To sanitize the activities of auto mechanics and technicians, the Delta State Government has flagged off the profiling of all engaged in auto-related trades across the state.
This was made known by the State Commissioner for Transport, Mr Onoriode Agofure, during a meeting with the leaderships of auto mechanics, technicians and related trades’ unions in Asaba.
Mr Agofure, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Directorate of Transport, Engr. Godfrey Fuludu, said government was worried about the public’s loss of confidence in the operations of some mechanics, auto electricians, panel beaters and spray painters and was bent on changing the narrative.
The Commissioner noted that there had been bitter experiences of vandalism of vehicles, exchange of good parts for bad ones, poorly repaired vehicles, among others, which did not speak well of the tradesmen.
He said profiling those in the various auto-related trades would ensure their proper identification, and provide information on the location of workshops, areas of specialization and next of kin, all of which would guide members of the public in making decisions on where to take their vehicles for repairs at any given time.
The Commissioner urged members of the unions to sensitize their members on the need to key into the programme, which he said would also help to eliminate quackery in the trades.
In his remarks, the Consultant of the scheme, Engr. Egogo Lawrence assured the unions that steps would be taken to ensure a seamless implementation, pointing out, however, that enforcement would be backed by a Mobile Court to ensure an appreciable level of compliance.
