Delta born Professor of International Relations, Sunday Akpotor laid to rest

The passage of Professor Sunday Akpovuyono Akpotor, a lecturer with Delta State University, Abraka, has been described as a great loss to the Urhobo Nation and the academic world.

Dignitaries from all walks of life including the Vice-Chancellor of the Delta State University, Abraka, Professor Andy Egwuyenga, graced the burial programmes of the renowned Professor of International Relations which climaxed on Sunday, October 24, 2021, with an outing service by the family at the All Saints’ Chapel Anglican Communion, Delta State University, Abraka.

The final journey of the renowned Professor of International Relations, Sunday Akpotor on earth began with a service of songs held on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, at his Ughelli residence.

Friends and well-wishers including two-time Commissioner of Works in Delta State, Chief James Augoye attended the service of songs with Venerable Amos Esibe, Chaplain of the All Saints Anglican Chapel, Delta State University, Abraka ministering.

On Friday, a commendation service was held in honour of late Professor Sunday Akpotor late at Atscan Hall, site two of the Delta State University Abraka.

It was followed by a funeral service at the All Saints’ Chapel Anglican Communion, site three of the university.

And thereafter, his remains were interred at his country home in Agbarha-Otor, which was conducted by Venerable Esibe.

Venerable Esibe in his messages at the service of songs, funeral and outing services, stressed the need for Christians to stay away from sin which creates a distance between them and their creator adding that no one can live a fulfiled life outside the purpose they have been created for.

He described late Professor Sunday Akpotor as someone who committed his life to serve humanity hence his demise came to him as a shock.

He called on the family to seek solace in God during these trying times and live by the legacy of their father.

Leading the pack of tributes, Vice-Chancellor of the Delta State University Abraka, Professor Andy Egwuyenga described the late Professor Sunday Akpotor as one individual who gave his all to the growth of the education sector.

Former DESOPADEC Commissioner, Chief Ominimini Obiuwevbi, who spearheaded the committee of friends for the funeral said that the large turn-out of persons for the ceremony goes to show that late Professor Sunday Akpovuyono Akpotor was a grassroots man.

Chief Ominimini and others described Professor Akpotor as one who supported the course of the Urhobo Nation.

The wife of Professor Sunday Akpotor, Catherine and their child and daughter, Miss Eloho Akpotor said described him as a husband and father who was always there for his family and friends.

They thanked friends and family who stood by them during and after the burial praying God to bless them in all their endeavours.

A beautiful rendition was earlier presented by professor Omamurhomu Okobia to honour late Professor Sunday Akpovuyono Akpotor.

Until his death, Late Professor Akpovuyono Sunday Akpotor was the Director, Centre for Security, Peace, Conflict Resolution and Development of the Delta State University, Abraka.

He died at the age of 63.
