Delta @ 30: Winners of DBS Warri quiz competition receive prizes

A 15-year-old Master Great Evuetapha of Otokutu Grammar School in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State has emerged as the overall winner of the senior category of the maiden edition of the Delta At 30 quiz competition organised by the management of Delta Broadcasting Service, DBS, Warri.

While Miss Oghenema Usirada of Anglican Grammar School, emerged overall winner in the junior category after a keenly contested quiz competition that centred on the culture, the people and the history of Delta State.

A total of 20 students between the ages 10-15 featured for the Delta At 30 quiz competition for the senior category while 32 students between the ages 10-14 slug it out for the junior category.

After weeks of excellent and brilliant display of knowledge and intelligence by the students, Master Great Evuetapha of Otokutu Grammar School emerged overall winner for the senior category while Oyebamiji Ayomide of Federal Government College, Warri took the second position while Miss Blessing Kingsley of Abe 1 Secondary School came third.

In the junior category, Miss Oghenema Usirada of Anglican Grammar School emerged overall winner, Master Okeoghene Shadrack of Urhobo College came second and Miss Sophia Orugbo of New Era Model School took the third position.

Speaking during the presentation ceremony of prices for the competition, the General Manager of Delta Broadcasting Service, Warri, Pastor Malcolm Oteri said that the Delta At 30 quiz competition was designed by the management of the station to celebrate the anniversary of the creation of Delta state in 1991 and to assist in redirecting the mindsets of the younger generation for a better society.

While stressing the need for all to join ideas and efforts towards raising a new generation of leaders with high moral values, Pastor Oteri hailed the brilliant display of knowledge by the students during the quiz competition adding that the initiative has further broadened the intellect of the students on the culture and history of the state.

The DBS Warri General Manager, who reminded the students that they are the change agents Nigerians have been clamouring for, urged them to be studious and never to grow with the notion that education is a scam.

He commended the students, parents, management of DBS Warri and the organising committee headed by the programme coordinator, Ogheneghare Abokwara, for the success of the competition promising to make it an annual event.

The immediate past Delta State Commissioner for Technical Education, Mrs Gbugbemi Ikolo, a renowned constitutional lawyer, Dr Akpo Mudiagha Odje, a university don, Prof Godini Darah, the President-General of Ekete community, Evangelist Emmanuel Kpomalefe, who chaired the event and a Special Assistant to the Governor, Comrade Austin Ozobo, all described the initiative of the Delta At 30 quiz competition as noble.

They commended the management of DBS Warri for helping to build the students to become better future leaders.

They also reminded the students to study hard as there is no short court to success and urged them to shun corrupt practices but imbibe the culture of transparency, honesty and diligence in all aspects of their lives.

Some students who emerged winners at the quiz competition commended the management of Delta Broadcasting Service, Warri, for the programme and appealed for sponsorship of more of such programmes.

The presentation ceremony featured poem recitation, a brief history of Delta state, cultural display and cutting of the Delta At 30-anniversary cake.

The high point of the event was the presentation of certificates and cash gifts to the winners of the Delta At 30 quiz competition.
