The Delta State Police Command has commenced disciplinary proceedings against a group of police officers captured in a viral video assaulting a young man near the Asaba Specialist Hospital.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, July 27, 2025, sparked widespread outrage after the footage went viral on social media.
In response to public condemnation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, swiftly ordered the identification and arrest of the officers involved.
According to the Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, the implicated officers are currently in custody at the Command headquarters, adding that an orderly room trial is being prepared, and their team leader, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), has been issued a formal query.
CP Abaniwonda condemned the conduct of the officers, calling it “unacceptable” and “not reflective of the values upheld by the Delta State Command.”
“It is not in the character of this Command to trample on the rights of citizens or assault members of the public. Such conduct will not be tolerated under my leadership,” he said.
He assured the public that disciplinary measures would be taken in accordance with the Act and existing regulations.
He further urged all officers to maintain professionalism and respect the rights of Nigerians as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution.
The Police Commissioner also appealed for calm, promising that justice would be served.
