The President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has reaffirmed legislative backing for the proposed creation of Anioma State, with Asaba projected as its capital if the initiative succeeds.
Akpabio made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing party faithful at the South-South Zonal Congress of the All Progressives Congress held in Asaba, the capital of Delta State.
He also suggested that Warri could serve as the capital of the restructured Delta State in the event Anioma State is created, citing the city’s existing infrastructure such as its airport, presence of major oil companies, seaport prospects, government institutions and other administrative facilities.
The high-profile congress drew governors and party leaders from across the South-South geopolitical zone — including Edo State, Bayelsa State, Akwa Ibom State, Rivers State and Cross River State — alongside a wide range of stakeholders.
Describing the agitation for Anioma State as long-standing, Akpabio noted that the proposal is rooted in demands for equity, administrative efficiency and balanced regional development.
He added that the initiative, being championed by Senator Ned Nwoko, has continued to receive legislative attention in the 10th Senate.
According to the Senate President, the creation of Anioma State could promote decentralisation, bring governance closer to the grassroots and stimulate socio-economic development across affected communities.
“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity,” Akpabio said, while also calling for greater unity among political actors and citizens in the South-South region.
He further urged stakeholders to sustain support for the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, describing it as central to national growth, integration and improved welfare.
Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the congress, Senator Nwoko maintained that the agitation for Anioma State reflects the collective aspiration of the people of Delta North.
He commended the National Assembly, sub-national governments and community stakeholders for their support, pledging to continue pushing the proposal through constitutional processes.
