Conference of Speakers decries spate of insecurity in Nigeria

Speakers of the 36 states of the federation, under the aegis of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria, has decried the spate of insecurity in the country.

The Conference stated this in a communique issued at the end of its second-quarter meeting of the year held in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The Speakers, in the communique which was signed and read to newsmen by Rt Hon Abubakar Suleiman, who is the Speaker, Bauchi State House of Assembly, however, commended the efforts of the federal government at addressing the nation’s security challenges.

They called on stakeholders to use the opportunity of the constitutional amendment to accommodate community policing and state police in the country to effectively tackle the problem of insecurity.

The Conference commended Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, for hosting the meeting to discuss a wide range of issues affecting the nation.

The Speakers also commended Governors that have commenced the implementation of the financial autonomy in their states urging other State Governors to follow suit as agreed in the Memorandum of Action signed by all the stakeholders.

It called on all the State Houses of Assembly to pass Funds Management Bill for Assent of the Governors within the Forty-five days window allowed by stakeholders.
