Governance advocate and international conference speaker Dr Charles Apoki has been announced as the keynote speaker for the 2026 Advocate Publication Annual Lecture Series.
The Chairman of the Advocate Lecture Series Board of Council (ALSBC), Abraham Ogbodo, disclosed the development in a press release issued and signed by the Board’s Secretary, Mr Shedrack Onitsha, FCIISM, MNIPR.
According to the statement, Apoki emerged after what the Board described as a rigorous search process aimed at identifying a speaker whose experience and advocacy align with the vision for the 2026 edition of the annual lecture.
The keynote address, themed “From Ballot to Patronage: Why Electoral Victory Fails to Deliver Good Governance in Nigeria,” will interrogate the widening gap between electoral success and effective governance in the country.
The lecture is scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at the Wetland Hotel in Ughelli.
Organisers explained that the discourse will examine how elections often become instruments for transferring power from voters to political patrons rather than mechanisms for ensuring accountable leadership.
The forum is also expected to analyse the roles of godfatherism, weak institutional oversight and the monetisation of politics in undermining democratic mandates.
A panel session featuring experts drawn from the judiciary, law enforcement agencies and civil society organisations will follow the keynote presentation, with participants expected to propose practical reforms aimed at restoring public trust in Nigeria’s democratic processes.
Dr Apoki, a graduate of the University of Ibadan College of Medicine where he obtained his medical degree in 1984, also holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration.
Beyond his medical and clerical calling, he has built a reputation as a sought-after speaker addressing corporate organisations, institutions and government ministries.
Over the years, he has travelled widely across Africa and Europe, delivering transformational messages on leadership, governance and personal development.
He is the convener of the Word and Wisdom Conference — a leadership and capacity-building platform for pastors, entrepreneurs and professionals — and proprietor of Petra Christian Academy, an educational institution providing nursery, primary and secondary education in Nigeria.
The ALSBC expressed optimism that the 2026 lecture will stimulate critical national conversations on strengthening democratic institutions and aligning electoral victories with tangible service delivery and national development.
