A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former two-time member of the Delta State Executive Council, Olorogun Fred Majemite, has described Wednesday’s nationwide ward congress as peaceful, inclusive, and consensus-driven in Ughelli North Local Government Area.
Speaking in a phone interview with NewsNet Nigeria shortly after the exercise, Majemite said the congress across wards in Ughelli North was conducted without rancour, attributing the smooth outcome to sustained consultations among party leaders and elders ahead of the exercise.
“The ward congress went well. In Ward 1/5 and across Ughelli North, we finally had consensus on all positions. There was no crisis at all. It was rancour-free,” he said.
The APC conducted its ward congress nationwide on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as part of preparations for future electoral contests.
Majemite, who serves as Vice Chairman of the APC Leaders and Elders Council in Ughelli North and Chairman of APC Leaders and Elders Council in Ughelli North Constituency Two, said extensive engagements were held with aspirants before the congress.
According to him, those interested in contesting positions were invited to meetings where competence and capacity were prioritised over factional considerations.
“Before now, the leadership of the local government, leaders and elders, held several meetings. Those interested were consulted. We emphasized competence and capacity. That helped us avoid problems,” he explained.
He disclosed that he personally monitored activities in his ward and visited several other wards to ensure the process aligned with agreed decisions, noting that the local government party chairman also played an active role on the ground.
Dismissing claims of divisions between so-called “old” and “new” members of the party, Majemite said the congress effectively erased such distinctions.
“There was nothing like old and new. Everybody acted as one family. If someone was competent, there was no reason to replace the person. That dichotomy is no longer there,” he said.
While acknowledging that there were minor complaints in some areas, he described them as negligible and insufficient to undermine the overall success of the congress.
Looking ahead, Majemite expressed confidence that the peaceful exercise has positioned the APC in Ughelli North for electoral success in 2027.
“Most times, when you do not have a transparent and proper congress, that is where problems begin. With this development, we are home and dry. Ughelli North will deliver 100 percent by 2027,” he declared.
