Team Nigeria has risen to the 9th spot on the medals log in the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games holding in Birmingham following 2 gold medals and a bronze medal in the weightlifting event.

Adijat Olarinoye won Nigeria’s first medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games after clinching gold in the women’s weightlifting event on Saturday.

Contesting in the 55kg category, Olarinoye lifted a combined total of 203kg, a game record to win the Women’s 55kg Weightlifting event.

Olarinoye beat off competition from 10 other contestants to emerge victorious.

India’s Bindyarani Sorokhaibam placed second while Fraer Morrow of England finished third.

In the snatch, Olarinoye lifted 92kg and in the clean and jerk, she lifted 111kg for a total of 203kg, which was good enough for gold.

Olarinoye’s feat means Team Nigeria is in joint-ninth position in the medal standing.

Rafiatu Folashade Lawal also won a gold medal in the Women’s 59kg Weightlifting event.

On Sunday, Edidiong Umoafia clinched a bronze medal for Nigeria also in the weightlifting event.

In the men’s 67kg category, Umoafia lifted a combined 290kg to get on the podium.

It is Team Nigeria’s second medal at the games following Adijat Olarinoye’s gold medal feat in the women’s weightlifting.

Umoafia was beaten to the gold medal by India’s Jeremy Lalrinnunga who made a lift of 300kg, a games record.

Vaipava Ioane from Samoa won the silver medal with a lift of 293kg.
