The Warri–Itakpe train service has suffered another setback after a derailment occurred near Agbor in Delta State, barely four days after operations resumed.
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, saying the derailment happened around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and might have been caused by vandalism.
According to the statement signed by NRC’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, two out of the seven coaches of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service (WITS) were affected.
Opeifa assured that there were no casualties, adding that all passengers were safely evacuated to Agbor and fully accounted for.
“Our recovery team, supported by security personnel, has been on site since last night carrying out recovery operations. The process is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed soon,” the NRC boss said.
He further disclosed that train services along the corridor had been suspended temporarily to allow for a comprehensive safety and security audit of the track and related infrastructure.
“We regret any inconvenience this may cause our valued passengers and the general public. Normal operations will resume once it is verified safe to do so,” he added.
The latest incident follows a series of disruptions along the corridor.
The NRC had earlier suspended services on April 10, 2025, for 72 hours following multiple engine failures, and again in February due to technical faults.
Train services on the Warri–Itakpe line only resumed on October 29, 2025, after a prolonged suspension.
