The third edition of the Ofugara Peace and Unity Football Tournament has officially kicked off at the Ogbe Primary School football pitch in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State, with 24 veteran teams of retired footballers and ex-internationals aged 43 and above competing for glory.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Chairman of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue, Chief Solomon Ighrakpata, performed the ceremonial kickoff.
He emphasised unity, love, and peaceful coexistence as essential values, assuring that sports would continue to serve as a catalyst for social development under his administration’s MORE Agenda.
Uvwie Local Government Chairman, Hon. Anthony Ofoni, described the competition as a vital avenue for keeping the elderly active and healthy while strengthening community bonds.
Speaking on behalf of the host family, Barr. Antoinette Ofugara explained that the vision of the tournament transcends football.
According to her, this year’s edition is designed not only to promote physical fitness but also to reinforce social connections among the elderly, providing a vibrant platform for them to remain active and forge lasting friendships.
Major sponsors, Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, represented by its Head of Administration, Mrs Deicy Jaja, reaffirmed their commitment to the project.
She described the tournament as “a platform that fosters peace, unity, and healthy bonding,” while urging participating teams to display true sportsmanship.
Other dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Delta State Football Association, Hon. Godwin Adode, commended the Ofugara family for sustaining and improving the standard of the competition each year, noting its role as a unifying force in the state.
On the field, reigning champions Corner-Lux All Stars sent a strong signal of intent with a resounding 5–0 victory over Delta All-Stars Veterans International in the opening match.
This year’s edition, which holds on weekends, has mouthwatering prizes at stake: ₦10 million for the champions, ₦7 million for runners-up, ₦5 million for third place, and ₦3 million for fourth place. The tournament is scheduled to climax in the third week of November 2025.
