The member representing Warri South Constituency One in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Augustine Uroye, has appealed for calm and peaceful dialogue following the killing of Mr Jerry in the Iyara axis of Warri last Saturday, an incident that has heightened security concerns across the city.
Hon. Uroye, in a statement issued on Monday, condemned the violence that claimed the life of the young man and warned against any reprisal attacks that could plunge Warri back into ethnic hostilities.
He stressed that violence and division are not solutions to grievances, urging residents to embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence.
“The killing of Jerry is tragic and painful. I appeal to all communities in Warri to remain calm and resist any temptation to retaliate. We must choose dialogue over conflict, and unity over division,” the lawmaker said.
“The killing of Jerry is not just a loss to his family but a painful reminder of how fragile our peace is when we allow ethnic sentiment to take root,” Uroye added.
He called on the youths to shun violence and for government authorities at all levels to prioritise security and rule of law in Warri.
While commiserating with the family of the deceased, Hon. Uroye called on security agencies to intensify surveillance in flashpoint areas, fish out the perpetrators, and ensure that the rule of law is upheld.
He further urged the Delta State Government to strengthen its peace-building initiatives in Warri, noting that the city’s multi-ethnic character should remain its strength and not a trigger for violence.
The lawmaker also warned against the growing polarisation of neighbourhoods along ethnic lines, saying such divisions only fuel territorial disputes and insecurity.
According to him, stakeholders—including traditional leaders, youth groups, and community associations—must take responsibility for promoting peace.
Hon. Uroye reaffirmed his commitment to working with all parties to secure lasting peace, urging Warri residents to honour Jerry’s memory by rejecting violence and standing together as one people.
Security operatives have since been deployed to the Iyara axis to restore order.
