The Urhobos of Warri South and Patani Local Government Areas in Delta South Senatorial District under the aegis of the Urhobo Political Movement, UPM, say one of their sons and daughters would contest for the 2027 senatorial seat of the district in the National Assembly.

This was one of the resolutions reached during the hosting of the Warri South Chapter of UPM at the residence of the National Chairman, Chief Ominimini Obiuwevbi in Ughelli headquarters of Ughelli North Local Area in Delta State.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, Chief Ominimini flanked by the UPM National Deputy Chairman, Chief Ogaga Agiri and Chairman, UPM Warri South Chapter, Dr Uyomeyoma Kingsley Mariere, said “By the grace of God come 2027 Urhobo will contest for the position senator for Delta South Senatorial District.

“Urhobos want to take their position in the scheme of things in Delta South Senatorial District. We hate it when they call Delta South Senatorial District meetings and they call Ijaw, Isoko and Itsekiri without giving due respect to the Urhobo people.

“Urhobos remain the determining factor in Delta South Senatorial District because the Urhobos of Warri South and Urhobos of Patani Local Government Areas put together make up the second-largest ethnic nationality in Delta South Senatorial District. The Urhobo people of Delta South Senatorial District have not benefitted politically the way it ought to be.”

For the 2023 general elections, the Urhobos of Warri South and Patani Local Government Areas in Delta South Senatorial District under the banner of UPM also resolved to cast their votes en bloc and for persons who have the interest of the Urhobo people.

“Come 2023 by the grace of God we are now wiser and we will take our wise decision. So, this time around we will make sure that we do the needful for those who have the interest of the Urhobo, particularly in Delta South Senatorial District. Urhobos will determine who becomes the senator of Delta South Senatorial District,” said Chief Ominimini.

“Those that have failed us we will not cast our votes for them. It is those that will recognise us that we will cast our votes for.”

To achieve the goal of voting for persons of their choice, it was resolved that members of the Urhobo Political Movement, UPM, should aggressively mobilise members of their families and communities to take advantage of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Continuous Voter Registration to get their Permanent Voter’s Card.

Consequently, it was adopted that the Permanent Voter’s Card will be to admit members of UPM to its meetings and other activities.

Also during the meeting, Ughelli hosting the Warri South Chapter of UPM was adjudged as the best performing chapter.
