Former Super Eagles midfielder, Christian Obodo, who was kidnapped on Sunday evening in Delta state has been freed by his abductors, reports Niger DELTA TODAY (NDT) Online.

NewsNet had on Sunday evening exclusively broke the news of the abduction of Obodo by gunmen along Refinery Road, Effurun in Uvwie Local Government Area of the state.

A female friend of the former footballer who was also abducted was also freed by the captors.

The 36-year-old ex-international was abducted by the gunmen when he stopped by to buy a banana at about 5pm.

It was gathered that the footballer who retired recently from his Greece Football Club, Appollon Smyrnis, paid undisclosed ransom before he was freed at about 10:30pm on Sunday.

A longtime friend of the former footballer, Engr. Big Sam, confirmed the release of Obodo on Monday to NIGER DELTA TODAY (NDT) Online.

“He has been released. He was released last night. I met him this morning. The town is becoming more unsafe. We are glad that he is back home,” Sam said.

This is the second time Obodo has been kidnapped by gunmen in the state.

The former Udinese midfielder was abducted on June 9, 2012, on his way to church in Warri but was later freed around Isoko area of the state.

Obodo had recently visited former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan to thank him for securing his release when he was kidnapped in 2012.
