Concerned about the deplorable condition of some roads in the Warri metropolis, the Chairman of Warri South Local Government, Dr Michael Tidi, recently approved the rehabilitation of failed portions of some of the roads.
Currently, rehabilitation works are being carried out at the Estate Roundabout and McIver area of the metropolis to ameliorate the suffering of road users who daily plying experience traffic gridlock, damage to their vehicles and loss of manhours.
Reacting to the development, some road users told NewsNet Nigeria that the rehabilitation when completed will go a long way in assuaging their feelings and changing their perception of the third tier of government.
They commended the Warri South Council chairman for embarking on the rehabilitation of the failed portions of the roads saying he has indeed rekindled their hope in his administration.
They, however, appealed to him to maintain the tempo as other areas need attention.
In a chat with NewsNet Nigeria, Tidi said, “We did need assessment and came to the realisation that motorists spend manhours on those routes.
“As a responsive government, we heeded the call of the people. It’s a way of complimenting the state government’s urban renewal efforts.
“Generally, we are concluding our social contract with the people. The rehabilitation of those failed portions would encourage unfettered commerce in those areas.”
With the August break winding up motorists and pedestrians using these roads under rehabilitation will no doubt heave a big sigh of relief when the rains begin to pour heavily again.
