The much-anticipated 2nd edition of the Ofugara All-Stars Peace and Unity Football Tournament has officially begun as 20 veteran teams go head-to-head in 17 thrilling days.

The tournament, which has become a cornerstone for the local sports communities in Delta state, features a unique mix of ex-internationals and prominent business leaders, ensuring a high-quality display of footballing prowess.

At the opening ceremony, the chairman of Uvwie Local Government Council, Hon. Anthony Ofoni emphasized the critical role sports play in maintaining both physical and mental well-being, especially as individuals grow older adding that “Staying active not only keeps the body in shape but also sharpens the mind.

“It is essential to embrace such initiatives that help prevent the health complications often associated with ageing. Football, in particular, offers the perfect blend of fitness and fun.”

Hon. Ofoni also highlighted the power of sports in fostering peace and unity across communities.

“This tournament isn’t just about football—it’s about building bridges and creating harmony among us.

“I urge all the teams to play with integrity and sportsmanship. Let this event be a reminder of the love and togetherness we should have for one another as we strive to live in peace.”

He extended his gratitude to the Ofugara family for organizing the prestigious annual event, singling out Mr. Silver Ofugara for his unwavering commitment.

“I commend Mr. Silver Ofugara for his dedication in bringing this vision to life. This competition is not just a sporting event but a movement that enhances community spirit. I encourage private individuals and corporate entities to follow this noble example of using sports to build a better society,” said Ofoni.

Representing the Ofugara family, Barr. Antoinette echoed the sentiments of unity and health.

He said, “This year’s edition of the tournament is focused on not only promoting physical fitness but also strengthening social bonds, particularly among the elderly population in Delta State.

“We aim to create a vibrant platform where older citizens can stay active while forging new friendships that will last a lifetime.”

On the pitch, the opening match in Group A saw reigning champions, Uvwie Ex-Players, fall to Ijaw All Stars in a nail-biting contest, with Ijaw securing a 2-1 victory.

The match sets the tone for what promises to be an exhilarating competition.

The Ofugara Peace and Unity Cup is a veteran All-Stars football league tailored for players aged 43 and above, creating a unique stage for seasoned footballers to showcase their skills while promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.
