Team Delta on Saturday maintained its lead on the medals table at the ongoing sixth edition of the National Youth Games taking place in Ilorin, Kwara State after winning fifteen gold medals on day two of the competition to bring its tally to twenty-eight gold medals.

Team Delta claimed a total of seven gold medals in swimming to maintain its unassailable lead.

The defending champions claimed a total of seven gold medals in the swimming event on Saturday and also got gold in Darts and two gold medals in the weightlifting event to maintain its unassailable lead.

Team Lagos, however, won 10 silver and six bronze medals in the swimming events.

Speaking after the swimming events, the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Tonobok Okowa, commended the athletes for their commitment and doggedness.

Tonobok Okowa noted that despite the intense competition from their opponents, Delta athletes have remained unshaken in their resolve to return as champions.

He assured them that Deltans were solidly behind them especially Governor Ifeanyi Okowa who has continued to ask about their welfare and performances at the games.

The President of the Nigeria Aquatic Federation, Chief Chinonye Dafe-Aliyu described the performances of the various states as commendable noting that it was clear Nigeria could become a force in world swimming in future.

She assured athletes of a better environment as the Aquatic Federation during her tenure will explore avenues to put Nigeria on the international swimming map.

Team Delta is currently leading the Medal table with thirty-two Gold medals, followed by Edo and Plateau States with eight and four Gold medals respectively as at press time.
