Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been thrown into uncertainty following the sudden retirement announcement of team captain, William Troost-Ekong, just days before the kickoff of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The experienced defender, who has been a mainstay of the national team for nearly a decade, made the announcement via his official social media handles on Wednesday, citing personal reflection, physical demands, and a desire to allow younger players take charge of the future.
Troost-Ekong, who captained Nigeria to a runners-up finish at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, described the decision as a difficult but necessary one, thanking Nigerians for their unwavering support throughout his international career.
Reactions have continued to trail the development, with fans, former internationals, and football stakeholders expressing mixed feelings of shock, gratitude, and concern over the timing of the decision.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation is expected to name a new captain as the Super Eagles intensify their preparations for the continental tournament, which kicks off in Morocco on December 21st.
