The Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ede Dafinone, on Wednesday joined his colleagues at the National Assembly to warmly welcome former Delta State Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, during his visit to the Nigerian Senate.
Ibori was at the Senate chamber to witness the swearing in of two new senators: Joseph Ikpea (APC Edo Central) and Emmanuel Nwachukwu (APGA Anambra South).
Joining him at the hallowed Chamber were former Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shuaibu; Lee Ikpea, Samson Osagie, among others.
Chief Ibori, who served as Delta State Governor from 1999 to 2007, was received with enthusiasm and respect by lawmakers across party lines.
His visit to the Senate generated widespread attention, as several legislators, including Senator Dafinone, described it as a “homecoming” for a leader whose political legacy remains deeply rooted in Nigeria’s democratic and developmental history.
Speaking after the courtesy visit, Senator Dafinone commended Chief Ibori for his enduring contributions to national development and his role in laying the foundation for modern Delta State.
He noted that Ibori’s influence continues to inspire many political leaders from the Niger Delta and beyond.
“Chief James Ibori remains an important figure in Nigeria’s political evolution. His leadership during the formative years of the Fourth Republic helped shape governance and development in the Niger Delta region. It was an honour to receive him today at the Senate,” Senator Dafinone stated.
The atmosphere at the National Assembly complex was described as cordial and reflective, as senators and other dignitaries engaged the former governor in discussions on national unity, economic reforms, and the strengthening of federal institutions.
Chief Ibori’s visit comes amid renewed efforts to promote collaboration between federal lawmakers and key stakeholders from the oil-producing states to drive equitable development and regional stability.
