The Udu Local Government Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State has inaugurated a new Ward Executive Council for Ovwian Community, while also extending financial support to local widows.
The grand ceremony, held on Tuesday at the Ovwian Community Town Hall, attracted a large turnout of party members and supporters.
It came at a crucial time for the party, following recent defections to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Udu PDP Chairman, Comrade Johnbull Kenairu, who presided over the inauguration, charged the newly elected Exco to strengthen the party’s grassroots structures and deepen its engagement with the people ahead of future elections.
He emphasised the importance of unity and service, saying: “We are committed to creating an inclusive, vibrant, and responsive local government. Our focus will be on improving the lives of our people, particularly the most vulnerable.”
The new Exco, led by Comrade William Saiki, pledged loyalty to the PDP and promised to work tirelessly for the welfare of the community.
As part of the day’s activities, the party rolled out an empowerment programme for widows in the community, particularly those who remained loyal to the PDP despite political pressures.
Fourteen widows received financial assistance, with assurances that more would be empowered in the near future.
The initiative was spearheaded by PDP leader Chief Moses Uparan, who described it as a reflection of the party’s commitment to social welfare.
“We understand the unique hardships our widows face. Beyond material support, this gesture is about restoring hope and giving them opportunities to rebuild their lives,” Uparan stated.
Beneficiaries expressed heartfelt appreciation, calling the support a life-changing intervention that would ease their burdens and help them provide for their families.
The event ended on a note of solidarity, as leaders and members reaffirmed their shared vision for a stronger PDP in Udu.
Exco Chairman Saiki summed up the mood, saying: “This is just the beginning. Our renewed sense of purpose will drive Udu’s growth and prosperity for the benefit of all residents.”
