Comrade Sonia Unobunjo has emerged as the fifth chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Delta State.

Unobunjo, overwhelmingly defeated her only challenger, Comrade Anthonia Mowah in the Delta NAWOJ 2022 election which was held yesterday Friday, July 15, 2022, at the Press Centre Hall of Government House, Asaba, the state capital.

She scored 107 votes while Mowah polled 46 votes in an intriguing contest that has never been experienced in the history of NAWOJ election in the state.

The incumbent state Chairperson of NAWOJ, Comrade Pat Gbemudu was alleged to have worked against the emergence of Comrade Sonia Unobunjo.

Comrade Gbemudu was said to have been disappointed and initially left the venue of the election the moment Comrade Unobunjo was declared the winner but was later prevailed upon by the officials sent to conduct the election before she returned to perform her handing over to the winner.

Qualified and practising women journalists were massively mobilised for the election from the sixteen Chapels that make up the NUJ Delta Council by the campaign structure christened Sonia NAWOJ Progressive Movement, SNPM, headed by Comrade Florence Nwabuonwu as the Director-General.

Comrade Sonia Unobunjo was the Caretaker Committee Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Delta State Council that midwife the election that brought in the present State Executive of the NUJ, led by Comrade Michael Ikeogwu.

She was former Vice Chairperson of Delta NAWOJ from 2014 – 2016 and 2016 – 2017; two-time chairman, NUJ DBS Warri Chapel 2017 – 2020 and 2020 – 2022.

Comrade Sonia Unobunjo, who joined DBS Warri in 2011, resigned in 2022 while in her second tenure as chairman, NUJ DBS Warri Chapel to contest for the Delta NAWOJ 2022 election.

Apart from the position of chairperson other positions were returned unopposed in the election.

She leads six other members of her executive to pilot the affairs of Delta NAWOJ for the next three years.
