Charles Oniyere, a current serving member of the Delta State House of Assembly under the banner of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has just resigned his membership of the party.
Oniyere on Tuesday dumped the APC for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, with hundreds of his supporters when the Delta PDP Governorship candidate, Sheriff Oborevwori stormed Ughelli North Local Government Area in continuation of his Ward to Ward campaign across the state for the 2023 general elections.
Oniyere who represents Ughelli North Constituency I rode on the shoulder of the Delta APC governorship candidate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege to clinch the party’s ticket and win the constituency seat in the State Legislature in the 2019 general elections.
The first-time lawmaker hails from Agbarha-Otor community, a neighbouring community to Orogun where Omo-Agege, the current Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate comes from.
Though the defection of Oniyere maybe viewed as another setback for Omo-Agege who is hoping to become the next governor of Delta State in 2923, some inside sources in the camp of the APC in the state told NewsNet Nigeria that Oniyere’s popularity and acceptance over time have waned allegedly due largely to his far distance between him and his constituents.
This, the sources alleged accounted to why Oniyere lost the APC House of Assembly primary to the current ticket holder, Matthew Omonade.
