Newly elected chairman of the Delta State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Elder Omeni Sobotie, has said that the party was set for victory ahead of the 2023 general elections in the state.
Sobotie, a one-time Commissioner for Environment in the state stated this in his acceptance speech during the conduct of the rancour-free congress held at the Federal College of Education, Technical, Asaba.
In attendance at the congress were the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, Senator Peter Nwaoboshi, Olorogun O’Tega Emerhor, Chief Frank Ovie Kokori, Revd Francis Waive among other top leaders of the party in the state.
Sobotie, an engineer was elected unopposed by affirmation by the accredited delegates from across the 25 Local Government Areas in the state after two of the contestants vying for the chairmanship position stepped down for him.
The former Students’ Union Government President of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, thanked the party and delegates for giving him the opportunity to serve and promised he would not betray the confidence they have reposed in him.
Chairman of Delta State APC Congress Committee, Senator Ajibola Bashiru, who led six other members of the committee to conduct the congress told the delegates that although the offices were unopposed, paragraph 6 of the guidelines for the congress provided that there should be affirmative voting.
Bashiru noted that with the peaceful conduct of the exercise, APC is set for victory in the state.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the state congress, the Deputy President of The Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, commended the peaceful and rancour-free atmosphere at the congress.
He called on the newly elected state executive to embark on a reconciliatory process and ensure that everyone is carried along in the running of the affairs of the party.
Senator Omo-Agege who also commended leaders and stakeholders of the party said members of the party remain committed to the ideals on which the APC was founded.
Also elected through affirmation by the delegates at the congress for the three senatorial chairmen of the party were Chief Pauline Akpeki, Delta Central, Ogbueshi Adizue Eluaka, Delta North and Mr Austin Orighoye, Delta South.
Others were State Secretary, Mr Nick Ovuakporie, State Publicity Secretary, Mr Valentine Onojegho and 30 others.
The state congress of Delta APC which produced the renowned political strategist, Elder Omeni Sobotie as chairman to lead a 35-man executive to run the affairs of the party was conducted, monitored and supervised by the Delta State APC Congress Committee, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC and security operatives.
