Gbagi according to media reports was the sole governorship aspirant of the SDP at the primary.

He was said to have emerged through a voice motion moved by a delegate, Mr Mike Ujobolo, from Bomadi Ward 3 and supported by another delegate, Pastor Victor Agbula Igbule from Ward 6 in Udu Local Government Area.

Recall that Gbagi was until last week a governorship aspirant in Delta State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
