The chairmanship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Isoko North and Isoko South Local Government Areas of Delta State, Mr Christian Iteire and Hon Victor Asasa, on Friday, failed to show up for the media engagement organised by the Delta State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), apparently for fear of being able to measure up with the chairmanship candidates of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in the council areas.
The NUJ Delta had on Friday at the Isoko Development Union secretariat by Oleh Roundabout in Isoko South Local Government Area commenced a media engagement to avail chairmanship candidates of political parties contesting the March 6, 2021, local government elections in the state a One on One opportunity unfold their programmes, policies and manifestoes to the electorates and general public.
Iteire and Asasa it was gathered deliberately stayed away from the event for alleged incompetence, a dearth of ideas and lack of confidence to match the APC chairmanship candidates, Cornelius Ugoh, Isoko North and Mrs Hoplyn Eruore Ayu, in the media engagement.
Ugo and Ayu gave a good account of their preparedness to lead their people at the grassroots before a cross-section of journalists that converged at the IDU secretariat ably led by the Chairman of the Delta State Council of the NUJ, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu and his executive.
Some journalists who spoke with NewsNet expressed their disappointment with the attitude of the PDP chairmanship candidates who they alleged are still working with the notion that anybody that picks the party’s ticket wins election especially local government elections.
They said, “Judging by the rich and convincing programmes of the APC chairmanship candidates, it is now left for the electorates of these two council areas to take their destinies in their own hands by ensuring that their votes count.”
Meanwhile, the state chairman of Delta NUJ, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu has condemned in strong terms the nonchalant attitude of some of the chairmanship candidates for the upcoming local government elections in the state.
Comrade Ikeogwu gave the condemnation at the Secretariat of Isoko Development Union (IDU) shortly after the flag-off of the union’s platform at the IDU secretariat in Oleh, to engage all the chairmanship candidates of the various political parties for the upcoming local government elections in the state on a one-on-one discourse.
