The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says it will proceed with the November 6, 2021, Anambra State gubernatorial election despite the deteriorating security situation in the state.
Chairman of the Commission, Prof Mahmood Yakubu stated this in Abuja at an emergency meeting of the Inter-Agency consultative meeting on election security.
The meeting by by INEC and security agencies was held on Tuesday at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
In his address at the meeting, the INEC boss said the Commission is deeply concerned with safety of voters and election day staff, including security officials.
For his part, the National Security Adviser (NSA) Babagana Monguno, represented by Sanusi Galadima, said the scuttling of election constitutes a danger to the nation’s democracy.
He assured that the Federal Government is working assiduously to secure citizens during the election.
The emergency meeting by INEC with Security agencies is coming 32 days to the Anambra gubernatorial election, following series of attacks on INEC facilities and security agents.
