The Delta State Police Command has thwarted a coordinated attempt by hoodlums and criminal elements to disrupt New Year’s Eve celebrations in parts of Asaba, arresting no fewer than 43 suspects in a decisive overnight security operation.
The disclosure was contained in a statement issued on New Year’s Day by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright.
The operation, which commenced around midnight on Thursday, January 1, 2026, was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and involved Divisional Police Officers, tactical commanders, and patrol teams deployed across key locations in the state capital.
According to the statement, the suspects exploited the large crowds that gathered to usher in the New Year, engaging in widespread acts of lawlessness.
These included blocking major roads, staging illegal car races, reckless driving, throwing fireworks at unsuspecting members of the public, and knocking down commuters.
The situation escalated when the hoodlums allegedly attacked police patrol teams, pelting officers with stones and other dangerous objects while burning tyres at strategic junctions, deliberately obstructing free movement, particularly for worshippers returning from New Year church services.
SP Bright said police operatives responded swiftly, deploying lawful crowd-control measures to disperse the violent groups, restore order, and prevent a total breakdown of law and order in the metropolis.
At the end of the operation, 43 suspects were arrested. Recovered items included 25 motor vehicles, eight tricycles, fireworks, hard drugs, and other offensive weapons. All suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue, after which those found culpable will be charged in court.
The Delta State Police Command condemned the actions of the hoodlums in strong terms, warning that criminal elements who attempt to exploit festive periods to foment violence or attack security personnel will face firm and lawful consequences.
Normalcy has since been restored in Asaba, with intensified patrols and continuous monitoring still in place.
The Command reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, while urging the public to celebrate responsibly and promptly report suspicious activities.
