Human rights activist and Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, was on Thursday arrested by officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in Abuja, shortly after leaving the Federal High Court premises.
Sowore had visited the court to meet Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who is facing trial on charges of alleged terrorism and treason.
His arrest comes days after he led a protest on October 20 demanding Kanu’s release. The demonstration, held in Abuja, was dispersed by police officers who fired teargas canisters at protesters and commuters.
During the protest, the police also arrested several participants, including Aloy Ejimakor, a lawyer representing Kanu. Ejimakor and 12 others were later charged with offences such as conspiracy, disobedience of a lawful order, and inciting public disturbance, contrary to sections 152, 114, and 133 of the Penal Code Law.
A magistrate’s court in Abuja subsequently ordered their remand pending further proceedings.
