Facts have emerged on what allegedly led to the explosion of a gas station situated in Effurun near Warri, Delta State on Monday night.
The popular gas station NELMIC Gas plant located opposite the Effurun Post Office exploded around 10pm with a huge bang which was heard several kilometres away and caused buildings close by to shake.
A dependable source who resides near the gas plant told NewsNet Nigeria on Tuesday morning that the disaster could have been averted if the management of the plant was responsive to take action at the initial time gas emission was noticed around the plant.
“Before the staff of the gas plant closed for the day, some residents and passersby had drawn the attention of the manager to the gas emission from the plant apparently due to leakage.
“In flagrant disregard and carelessness, the manager said the leakage will be attended to the following day Tuesday and that was how they closed for the day,” said the source.
It was further gathered that eventually, fire erupted on a pipe which gradually led to the explosion that some residents of Effurun and its environs mistook to be a bomb.
Though no death was recorded some onlookers, particularly those filming with their phones before the explosion may have sustained injuries.
Attempt to get the comment of management of NELMIC Gas plant was unsuccessful.
