The publisher of Ejes Gist News, Omajemite Don, has called on Nigerian media platforms to work together to combat the spread of fake news in Nigeria.

Omajemite made this call while speaking to journalists in a one-day lecture organised by the Humanitarian Movement for Development (HMD) titled “the media and fake news”.

He stated that “collaboration between media organisations can help to promote accurate and reliable reporting. By sharing resources, expertise, and information, media organisations can create fact-checking networks, promote media literacy initiatives, and support responsible journalism practises.

According to Omajemite, fake news has become a serious problem in Nigeria and is a threat to the integrity of the media and the well-being of the country.

The spread of fake news is promoted by the proliferation of social media platforms and the ease with which information can be shared online.

This is particularly problematic in Nigeria, where social media is a primary source of news for many people.

False information can be shared widely, and it can be difficult to discern what is true and what is not. In Nigeria, this has led to instances of false reports about health issues, security incidents, and political activities.

To combat this issue, all Nigerian media platforms must work together to promote accurate, reliable, and trustworthy reporting. The following are some of the reasons why collaboration is necessary:

By working together, the media can promote responsible journalism practises such as fact-checking, source verification, and balanced reporting.

Omajemite emphasised that “fact-checking is a critical tool in the fight against fake news.”

The media has a responsibility to report accurate and truthful information to the public.

Nigerian media platforms can create fact-checking networks that can quickly identify false information and provide source verification. This approach can help prevent the spread of fake news and promote balanced and accurate reporting.

Media organizations can establish themselves as credible sources of information if they work together. This can help counter the negative effects of fake news, which can undermine public trust in the media.

Nigerian media must work together to fight against fake news in order to combat the negative effects of social media, address the spread of misinformation during crises, protect vulnerable populations, and promote responsible journalism.
