The Special Assistant, Media, to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, Comrade Fidelis Egugbo says the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) is still very relevant to the unity of Nigeria.
Egugbo spoke on Thursday when he joined the staff and students of Maris Secondary School, Amachai-Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State to celebrate the birth anniversary of Miss Grace Jesse, a Corp member who is serving in the school.
The Special Assistant said that more than four decades after the setting up of the NYSC scheme, it is still providing opportunities for youths of the country to know areas they would not have visited as Nigerians.
Egugbo said, “Corper, today, I join your friends, your colleagues and your students to thank God for another opportunity He has given to you to mark the anniversary of your birth.
“This year’s anniversary is unique because you are marking it as a member of NYSC serving the nation in the Big Heart State, Delta.
“As you have seen, Delta remains one of the most peaceful states in the country, the people are very hospitable and God is using our Governor, Senator Dr Ifeanyi Okowa to do a lot of things in the state.
“From the NYSC Orientation Camp at Issele-Uku to all nooks and crannies of the state, the work of the governor is evident as a true democrat who was massively chosen by the people because of his track-records in service delivery.
“From what you have said, you never knew that you will ever visit Delta; you even wished you could be redeployed but, today, you have seen that you have good hosts in Okanam people and generally speaking, receptive and friendly people in Delta.
“That is the beauty of the NYSC; I was posted to Jigawa State and that was the first and last time that I experienced what it meant to be in the core North, but the memory lingers and the friends we made then are still in touch with us till date.
“As you move on in life, continue to make more friends, bring out your best in whatever you do and rely on God for your dreams to come to fruition; once again, happy birthday.”
Those who spoke at the occasion congratulated Miss Jesse on her birthday and wished her many happy returns.
Miss Jesse who became emotional at a stage thanked the teachers, students of Maris Schools and the host community, Amachai-Okpanam for making her comfortable in the state.
