Nine persons on Tuesday morning died from a gas explosion in the commercial city of Kano, Kano State.
The incident which occurred around Sabongari in Fagge Local Government Area of the state saw many school children trapped.
Confirming the incident, Kano State Commissioner of Police, Sama’ila Dikko, said it was not a bomb blast but a gas cylinder explosion.
Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were on ground to evacuate victims and the remains of dead persons from the scene of the incident.
Meanwhile, the Kano State government has called on residents to remain calm after the gas explosion in the Sabon Gari area of the state.
The State Commissioner for Information, Muhammed Garba, in a statement on Tuesday, said that the situation had been brought under control, as security agencies had taken over the area for rescue operations and investigation.
Garba said the state government will keep the public abreast of any development.
He also faulted the claim that the explosion occurred in a school, saying that it happened near an animal feed store opposite the school on Aba Road, Sabon Gari, Kano.
