The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday declined to confirm Lauretta Onochie as a national commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The Senate decision followed its consideration of the report of its Committee on INEC which recommended that her appointment be rejected.
Senator Kabiru Gaya chaired the committee which screened Ms Onochie’s appointment.
Mr Gaya said Ms Onochie was disqualified based on her partisanship and breach of the federal character principle saying there is already a serving commissioner from Delta State, Mary Agbamuche-Mbu, where she hails from.
