Delta State House of Assembly has condemned in strong terms the killing of soldiers in Okuama community of Ughelli South Local Government Area on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
In a resolution passed by the House, the Speaker, Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor who presided over Tuesday’s plenary, called on the State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori to urge relevant security agencies to investigate perpetrators of the dastardly act in line with appropriate laws.
In a motion of matters of urgent public importance, the member representing Ughelli South Constituency, Hon Festus Utuama called on members of the Hallowed Chamber to vehemently condemn the killing of 16 military personnel and 1 civilian on a peacekeeping mission to Okuama community.
Utuama who commiserated with the families of the slain soldiers and the Nigerian Army, also enjoined the House to call on the Delta State Governor to urge relevant government security agencies to investigate, arrest and prosecute all those behind the heinous crime in line with applicable laws of the state.
The lawmaker who called for the constitution of a Commission of Enquiry to investigate and unravel the immediate and remote causes of the crisis between Okuama community in Ughelli South and Okoloba Community in Bomadi Local Government Areas also appealed for measures to be put in place to protect the elderly men, women, children and vulnerable persons who may have suffered untold hardship or losses.
Other lawmakers in their various submissions while condemning the act, appealed to the Nigerian military to tamper justice with mercy by not executing vengeance on the entire community but rather fish out the culprits.
In a unanimous voice vote, the House passed a resolution, condemning the dastardly act, and calling on the state governor to set up a Commission of enquiry.
A minute of silence was also observed by the House in honour of the fallen heroes.
