Deputy Chief Whip of the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon Solomon Ighrakpata has stressed the need for active involvement of the younger generation in nation-building.
Hon Ighrakpata, who represents Uvwie Constituency in the state legislature stated this in his office at the Assembly Complex in Asaba, when he received in audience the leadership of the Students’ Representative Council of the Petroleum Training Institute, PTI, Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area.
The leadership of the Council was in the State Assembly to observe the plenary of the House as part of efforts to sharpen their skills in legislating for the Students’ Union Government of the institute.
Hon Ighrakpata who was delighted with the manner the young students lawmakers comported themselves all through Tuesday’s business of the state legislature at the Hallowed Chamber, said their determination to learn was gratifying and commendable.
The Deputy Chief Whip explained that the legislature remains the key to any democratic governance, including the Students’ Union Government, emphasising that there would be no democracy without the legislature, hence the need for the legislative arm of any government to play its part effectively and efficiently.
“As future leaders, you have prominent roles to play in achieving a great nation. Some of you will end up as legislators. Amongst the three arms of government (the legislature, Executive and Judiciary), the legislature is at the top due to its key role in democratic governance which every society yearn for. So you must be of good conduct, remain focused, perform your duties effectively and be role models to the younger ones,” Ighrakpata stated.
The lawmaker who doubles as the Chairman, House Committee on Special Duties, promised to remain supportive of ventures that promote youth development and empowerment.
The Speaker of the Students Representative Council, PTI, Effurun, Samuel Emmanuel Edoho, who led the delegation, said the visit to observe the plenary of the Delta State House of Assembly was very impactful and educative.
While thanking Hon Ighrakpata for facilitating the visit and the Speaker, Rt Hon Sherrif Oborevwori for the approval, Mr Edoho explained further that great values have been added to their desire for an effective and sound legislative arm in the student union government of the institute.
Mr Edoho assured that they will remain good ambassadors of the younger generation and appealed for continued support whenever the need calls for it.
The Deputy Chief Whip, Hon Solomon Ighrakpata later led the visiting students’ legislators to the Speaker’s office to say “thank you” to him.
