Deputy Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Arthur Akpowowo has underscored the importance of the media in enhancing socio-economic, political, infrastructural and National development.
The Deputy Speaker made the remarks in his office in Asaba, the State capital during an interface with Assembly correspondents.
Rt. Hon. Akpowhowo who commended the Assembly Press crew for their commitment to duty, efficient and effective reportage of the State Legislature, said the 8th Assembly under the leadership of Rt Hon Emomotimi Guwor would continue to provide a conducive environment for the discharge of their duties.
While urging the Journalists not to rest on their oars in their agenda setting role in the society, the Deputy Speaker assured the State Assembly correspondents of his preparedness to continue to partner with them in ensuring that the State continues to enjoy the dividends of robust legislation.
According to him, no sane society or organisation would undermine the importance of the media, stressing that he, particularly, would not dare undermine the press.
His words, “As lawmakers, if we must succeed in our legislative assignments, there is the need for us to continue to partner with the media as we cannot undermine the importance of the press.
“Here in Delta and, particularly, in this 8th Assembly, I promise that we will continue to work with the press.
“This is important because, we need you to not only inform the people what we are doing here at the chamber, but that you put us on our toes in relation to our cure assignment.
“Again, I say that we cannot undermine the importance of the press; we will continue to work together in order to achieve the required success that Deltans would be proud of” Rt. Hon. Akpowowo said.
Continuing, the Deputy Speaker, while paying glowing tributes to the immediate past Speaker of the House and Current Governor of the State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori for his endearing legacies, said that the 8th Assembly would not only sustain the tempo, but would strive to surpass the achievements of the former Speaker.
“We are not competing with him, but it is a known fact that he has laid a super structure and it is only normal that we sustain the tempo and, indeed, do MORE” Akpowowo stressed.
At the meeting, the House of Assembly correspondents told the Deputy Speaker that they were in his office to congratulate him on his emergence as Deputy Speaker just as they assured him of their preparedness to continue to discharge their duties creditably.
