Peter Rufai, former Super Eagles goalkeeper and one of Nigeria’s most iconic football figures, has died at the age of 61.

Fondly known as Dodo Mayana, Rufai’s death was confirmed on Thursday, July 3, 2025, by a senior official of the Lagos State Government.

Though no formal statement has been issued by his family, reports indicate the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion passed away Thursday morning after a prolonged illness.

Rufai was widely celebrated as one of Nigeria’s finest goalkeepers.

His heroics between the sticks helped Nigeria clinch its second AFCON title in Tunisia in 1994.

That same year, he played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s historic debut at the FIFA World Cup in the United States.

Renowned for his composure, leadership, and athleticism, Rufai was later recalled by coach Bora Milutinović for the 1998 World Cup in France, where the Super Eagles advanced to the Round of 16.

Over his illustrious international career, Peter Rufai earned 65 caps for Nigeria.

At club level, he played in Nigeria, Spain, the Netherlands, and Portugal, leaving an indelible mark wherever he went.

Peter Rufai’s legacy as a trailblazer and national sports icon will forever live in the hearts of fans and the Nigerian football community.
