The Kebbi State Government has ordered the shutdown of all public and private secondary schools as well as all tertiary institutions across the state.
The directive was announced in a joint statement issued in Birnin Kebbi by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Alhaji Issa Abubakar-Tunga, and the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Halima Bande.
According to the commissioners, the decision became necessary following recent attacks in parts of the state.
The affected institutions include Kebbi State Polytechnic, Dakingari; Abdullahi Fodio University of Science and Technology, Aliero; College of Health Sciences and Technology, Jega; Adamu Augie College of Education, Argungu; and the School of Remedial Studies, Yauri.
They noted that the only institution exempted from the directive is the College of Nursing Sciences and Midwifery, Birnin Kebbi.
While urging full compliance, the commissioners advised school authorities to remain calm, adding that a new resumption date will be communicated later.
Meanwhile, the Yobe State Government has also ordered the closure of all boarding secondary schools due to rising security threats.
The announcement was made in a statement by Mamman Mohammed, Director-General of Press and Media Affairs to Governor Mai Mala Buni.
He explained that the directive follows a security meeting between the governor and security chiefs, who reviewed recent incidents affecting schools in parts of the country.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Bukar Bukar, has since instructed the immediate closure of all boarding schools pending an improvement in the security situation.
Governor Buni urged residents to pray for peace, security agencies, and the leadership of the country.
Yobe is the latest in a growing list of states shutting schools over escalating security concerns, particularly the mass abduction of students in northern Nigeria. Kebbi, Plateau, and Kwara have issued similar directives in recent days, while the Federal Government has closed 14 unity schools pending a security review.
These measures come amid a wave of student abductions and rising insecurity across several parts of the country.
