The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has lost five of its officials to reckless driving incidents across the country within the month of September 2025.
According to the corps, the fatalities occurred at different duty posts: Ekiti Sector Command on September 6, Ogun Sector Command on September 8, Taraba Sector Command on September 15, Jos By-Pass Unit Command on September 19, and Obollo Afor Unit Command on September 24.
Confirming the development in a statement on Tuesday, FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, described the deaths as a tragic reminder of the dangers faced by road safety personnel.
“Their deaths are not mere statistics, they represent human lives — dedicated fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, and breadwinners, cut short in the line of duty while safeguarding Nigerian roads,” he said.
Reacting to the incidents, the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, expressed grave concern over the rising risks faced by FRSC operatives, who, in addition to speeding vehicles, now also contend with kidnapping, violent attacks, and targeted assaults.
He directed that all motorists responsible for the deaths be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, stressing that the Corps would no longer tolerate acts of recklessness that endanger its personnel.
“The FRSC will intensify engagements with relevant authorities to enhance the protection of its personnel and installations. This measure is not intended for aggression but to deter assaults and ensure that officers can perform their duties without fear of attack,” Mohammed stated.
The Corps Marshal also urged operatives nationwide to prioritise their personal safety while on duty, noting that they must stay safe to continue saving lives on Nigerian roads.
