THE BIG BROTHER NAIJA PHENOMENON: A THREAT TO SOCIETAL VALUES
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LinkedinShare on Whatsapp

By Amb. Eki David Greg

“When the winds of change blow, some people build walls, while others build windmills.” In the face of the Big Brother Naija (BBN) phenomenon, it’s high time we assessed its impact on our society and decided whether to build walls of protection or windmills of indulgence.

THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF BBN

BBN has become a showcase for all sorts of negativity, promoting:

1. Moral decay: Explicit content and behaviour that can desensitise viewers to immoral acts.

2. Unhealthy competition: Emphasis on competition and conflict that can foster envy and quarrelsome behaviour.

3. Lack of role models: Contestants’ actions and attitudes that can negatively shape young minds.

A CALL FOR ACTION

“The future belongs to those who prepare for it today.” It’s time for our government, parents, religious leaders, academias, and activists to take a stand against programs like BBN.

GOVERNMENT’S ROLE

The government should invest in educational programmes that promote:

1. Cultural heritage: Preserving and promoting our rich cultural heritage to foster national pride and identity.

2. Positive role models: Showcasing inspiring stories and role models that promote good values.

3. Critical thinking: Encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving skills to empower our youth.

PROMOTING AFRICAN CULTURE

Africa’s culture stands for:

1. Community and togetherness: Valuing family, community, and social cohesion.

2. Respect and dignity: Promoting respect for elders, tradition, and human dignity.

3. Hard work and resilience: Encouraging hard work, perseverance, and resilience in the face of challenges.

EDUCATIVE PROGRAMMES: THE WAY FORWARD

“Knowledge is power.” Investing in educational programmes can empower our youth with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. By promoting positive content, we can:

1. Build a better future: Shape the minds of future generations.

2. Rebrand our nation: Promote positive values and role models that reflect our cultural heritage.

A CALL TO ACTION

“The time for action is now.” Let’s work together to create a society that values education, integrity, and positive role models. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and future generations to take a stand against programs like BBN and promote educational content that uplifts and inspires.

THE GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSIBILITY

The government should promote nice and inspiring programmes that:

1. Shape and build our youth: Empower our youth with positive values and role models.

2. Rebrand the society positively: Promote a positive image of our society and culture.

By working together, we can create a brighter future for our youth and our nation.

RESPONSIBLE PARENTS, SPEAK OUT!
