EFCC Denies Allegations of Coercing NNPCL Boss to Resign

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted claims that it unlawfully detained and forced the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, to resign.

This denial follows a Saturday report alleging that Ojulari was detained by EFCC operatives on Friday and compelled to sign a resignation letter, allegedly with the involvement of the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Ajayi.

Describing the allegations as “ridiculous and mischievous,” EFCC sources who spoke with The Cable said the report was entirely false and misleading.

“There is no need for EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede to abduct or force anyone to resign, as he is not an appointing authority,” a source stated. “If the Commission requires accountability from anyone, it follows due process—either by formal correspondence or official invitation.”

The source emphasised that Olukoyede, as the head of the country’s foremost anti-graft agency, has never employed coercive tactics in carrying out his responsibilities.

“Olukoyede is a law-abiding public servant. He has never abducted, coerced, tortured, or forced anyone out of office,” the official added.

The EFCC has called on the public to disregard the report, labelling it a deliberate attempt to tarnish the image of the Commission and discredit its leadership.
